A Cleansing Routine for Dry Skin

I have very dry skin that is prone to redness and texture on my cheeks. I have spent a lot of my life following cleansing routines of others and using products just because they are popular. I use to really focus on bathing my skin in rich heavy moisturizers, and when my above mentioned issues were not getting better, I knew i would need a better routine. my skin is now better than ever, so in this post I want to bust some myths i was fed and provide to you with what i now use!

The Real Tea for My Dry Skin

Lay off the heavy moisturizer
sunblock-1461397_1280I probably sound insane, but this is so true! while yes my skin is dry, relying on the richest moisturizer alone, only furthered the intense dryness on my skin. If I would skip a night moisturizing, the next day my face would feel like the Sahara dessert. I realized that I was barely treating the cause of my dry skin. built up dirt and skin cells need to be removed to any moisturizer to work well. Once they are removed, you will not need as heavy of moisturizers either.

Harsh exfoliants only damage skin
harsh exfoliantalways heard the ‘wisdom’: exfoliate to remove dead skins cells an reveal radiant smooth skin daily. while this is somewhat true, not many realize what we are exfoliating with and how often we should do it. I would think that I wasn’t doing my skin justice unless my exfoliation felt like nails. If an exfoliant is super abrasive, all it is doing is scratching/damaging your skin, which will cause more intense dryness and premature aging. You should also try to only exfoliate your face two-to-three times a week (I consider a Clarisonic an exfoliant too)! Make sure the exfoliant you are using doesn’t include pumice, volcanic rock, or anything that can’t dissolve easily. Opt for a sugar scrub or a very fine granule scrub.

Cleansing is key before your skin care products
CleansingThis one completely changed my world. I use to avoid deep cleansing my face for fear that it would dry my skin out more. When I clean my face now its a three step process of washing, cleansing, and then toning. Before I would only wash and didn’t realize that I was leaving so much dirt and clogged pores that my skin wouldn’t get the full benefits from my skin care products following. I also recommend that after you cleanse and tone that you go directly into your skin care routine for it to have the biggest impact.

The Products I use

Every night, I follow this routine – Wash, Cleanse, and Tone. I sprinkle in some exfoliation as well.

exfoliants I use, The Clarisonic Smart Profile & the Dermalogica Daily Superfoliant

I exfoliate my skin two-to-three times a week. I have a few ways of doing this. I use the Clarisonic Smart Profile or the Dermalogica Daily Superfoliant. exfoliating in moderation will help remove built-up dead skin cells and allow for your skin to be more even with less texture. If you over-do it, it could further exacerbate your dry skin.

face washes I use Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water & Purity Made Simple One-Step Facial Cleanser

Everyday I wash my face. If I am feeling very lazy, I will use the Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water. This product is amazing. Make sure to get the blue capped one and not the pink or green one. The pink one was very drying and caused some odd texture on my skin. I use this to take off my make up and clean my face every morning I wake up too! I also use the Purity Made Simple One-Step Facial Cleanser. I will use this with my Clarisonic when I exfoliate or on the daily with my hands before I go to bed.

Cleanser I use, Olay Total Effects 7 Revitalizing Foaming Cleanser

I know that both the products above have “cleanse” in their name, but I would not consider them a cleanser because they do not get deep into pores cleaning them out. After you cleanse, you should be able to run your fingers against your face and feel how squeaky clean it is (literally)! I use Olay Total Effects 7 Revitalizing Foaming Cleanser.

Facial toner I use Fresh Rose Deep Hydration Facial Toner

Last before I go into my night time skin routine, I make sure to use a toner. If you are a dry skin girl make sure that what ever toner you are using does not contain alcohol or it will dry out and strip your skin. The toner will clean up any dirt left behind and restore balance to your skin post-cleansing. Using a toner allow for your skincare products to have a bigger impact by absorbing better. I use the Fresh Rose Deep Hydration Facial Toner. My skin does really well is rose anything, so this was a must have! it not only balances my skin but it hydrates it as well. not to mention its filled with actual rose petals inside.

So that is is for my cleansing routine! Let me know if you have used any of these products or have recommendations!
